How it began

People with (incipient) dementia, forgetfulness and low digital skills can quickly become socially isolated. Smartphones and tablets are often too complex. 123Family was developed specifically for this target group and helps them stay in touch with loved ones easily.

Who we are

123Family was developed in a partnership with dementia specialists, caregivers, technicians, seniors and their family members to make a simple video calling infrastructure available to people with dementia and their loved ones.

Wendy

Ever since my mother was admitted to a small residential center, I have been using 123Family with my mother. My mother's main challenge is that her short-term memory is impaired due to dementia. 123Family provides the solution to video calling together despite this limitation.

The tablet hangs on the wall next to my mother's favorite sitting area and now all my mother has to do is look up to speak to me digitally. I mainly call my mother using the "automatic recording" feature and mother sporadically calls herself. There are two groups created in the app: a group with her daughter and her family and a group with her son and his family. All faces are visible on the screen, so her mother can also call herself by pressing a face.

Currently, I use 123Family on average twice a day. Mainly to chat and keep a finger on the pulse. Before my mother was admitted to the residential center, we were in close contact with each other because I was providing informal care. What's also nice is that the grandchildren can easily keep in touch with their grandmother this way.

It's nice to be able to talk to each other and see each other for a while.

My youngest granddaughter of 3 uses it to call Grandma and play together. The nice thing is that she can use it too. She especially enjoys drawing together. They don't see each other that often because the 3 hour drive is a bit far and so they can still see each other in between. The nice thing is that when they see each other, they don't have to get used to each other and it is immediately "Hi Grandma".
